Zisu Chaoyuan 子肅超遠

School: Linji | 1631–1689 | Teacher: Wenruo Ying

Lay surname Zhao, of Wuwei prefecture; styled Zisu. He left home at six under Shuijie Quan at Mt Simian, and later lived at Moyun hermitage on Mt Lu'an. At twenty-two he took the full precepts under the elder Yuan of Huishan, then studied vinaya with Jianyue at Huashan and called on Tianzhang of Guangjiao. At thirty-four he came to Wenruo Xingying at Fushan, who made him rector; after a seven-day intensive he broke through the ball of doubt, and became the direct heir of the Fushan elder in the orthodox Linji line. In the 8th month of 1672 he took up residence at the old Panlong monastery on Mt Zhongnan in Huazhou, and gave the ascent-of-the-hall there in 1678. He died 4/11 of 1689, aged 59, leaving twelve heirs.
